Review By:....................... Peter Breach

Venue:.............................The Corn Exchange Theatre

Performance Dates:........ 28th September to 2nd October 2010

Director:.......................... Alex Moores

Musical Director:.............Rodney Dawkins

This was a really outstanding production of one of the more popular works of Gilbert & Sullivan. The rendition of the overture was a treat in itself, offering a strong indication that the orchestra, comprised of extremely competent musicians under the skilled direction of Rodney Dawkins, would be making a superb contribution to this wonderful team effort. The visual effects created in this production were fantastic. The sets were well designed, the scenery very appropriate, the players make-up cleverly applied and their colourful costumes well fitting - all enhanced by some wonderful lighting. There were very impressive vocal performances from all the principals who incorporated fine acting into their respective roles. References to recent political goings-on were included that added humour. Director Alex Moore has a great understanding of the satire that abounds in G&S works and uses interaction of the chorus very effectively; I found the tantalising and mischievous behaviour of the fairies extremely appealing. This show was ‘five star' entertainment, my congratulations to all concerned.
